Spray to make gizmos completely waterproof

The death of my very first and favorite PDA (Personal Digital Assistant, as they were called during those days) came quite suddenly. I remember coming back from work one evening and being completely shocked to find the PDA dripping with water as I took it out of my bag. I swore to never put a water bottle and my gadgets together again, but repeated the mistake soon after, this time with my cell phone. Perhaps I could have saved ‘em fellas if the Golden Shellback Splash Proof Coating had been available back then - assuming I were rich enough to afford it.

This spray (rumored to be priced at $1000) can apparently protect electronic gadgets such as iPods, laptops, and cell phones from liquid, making them completely waterproof. For example, once you spray it onto your cell phone and drop the phone into water, the water-resistant coating ensures that the liquid stays completely out of your phone electronics. Which means that the phone is going to be functional as before, even underwater!

The coating itself is only one-thousandth of an inch thick, making it quite inconspicuous on your gadget. Pretty nifty, huh. Got to tighten those purse strings up until the latter half of the year if you want to lay your hands on this one.

Fuel Checker Prevents Terrifying Mistake

I’m not certain if this is one of the most useful or useless devices that I have ever reported on. This next device is for those who try to refuel their car with the wrong type of fuel. So if you’ve ever put diesel instead of unleaded in your car by mistake, perhaps this could prevent you from ruining your engine all over again.

Yes, I have never done that either, but I guess it couldn’t hurt to have a little preventative measure like this. All that is required is to install the gadget on the inside of your fuel flap, and go ahead and hold the fuel nozzle up every time you fill ‘er up. If you put the wrong type of fuel in, a little light will go off.

I don’t know about you, but most of the gas stations have the diesel pump separate from the regular, premium, or unleaded choices. Also, isn’t the nozzle of the diesel pump slightly larger than that of regular gas tanks?

I see one good use for this. Parents can put it on their gas tanks so when their kids fill the car up for the first time, there will be a warning in case the wrong gas is used.

So, you may not feel that you need something like this, but for those who are incredibly cautious, you can purchase it for about $40.

Zeemote and Sony Ericsson team up with new bundle

Zeemote, the company behind intelligent wireless controllers for mobile devices, have teamed up with Sony Ericsson to bring a totally different gaming experience to the world of cell phones by offering the Zeemote JS1 Controller to come bundled with the Sony Ericsson W760i. This unique controller will pair up with the handset using Bluetooth technology, and will be offered in an exclusive promotion throughout the Netherlands. Funny thing that this isn’t offered to other countries around the world - is there something we’re missing out on here? Did market research show that the Dutch are more prone to playing games on their cell phones, while the rest of the world uses our phones to, you know, carry out conversations? Well, that will be one of the mysteries in life I suppose, but I digress. On to the Zeemote JS1 shortly.

The Zeemote JS1 Controller offers a whole new way to play, although I suspect that the “revolution” it proposes won’t be anywhere near that of the Wii and its famous motion controller, the Wiimote. The JS1 does aim to bring a semblance of console gaming to the cell phone market, featuring a thumbstick and a quartet of trigger buttons to keep up with your lightning quick reflexes. It weighs a mere 1.7 oz, so you can be sure that your hands won’t suffer from cramps anytime soon despite long hours of gaming. I’d say keep a charger handy nearby, since Bluetooth connection tends to drain power quickly, what more with your phone running a processor intensive action like games.

This bundle will be available across the Netherlands starting from August 8th onwards till October 31st this year, where the Zeemote JS1 Controller will cost you nothing as long as you pick up Sony Ericsson’s new 3G-capable handset, the W760i Walkman. Bearing the Walkman marque means this is one mean music playing cell phone, although the inclusion of the Zeemote JS1 also underlies its capability and potential to handle games that are more complex than most cell phone games we see in the market today. Each W760i will come pre-loaded with a couple of Zeemote Ready games, while there will be another 14 titles which can be downloaded via the Fun & Downloads section.

Last weeks coolest gadget and winner of the Sansa Fuze are…

We had some great entries in last weeks coolest gadgets contest but one entry stood out with the voters, taking 34% of the votes, the Working Jet Pack.

I can imagine that machine-assisted flight is probably one of the greatest thrills technology has to offer. It does cost about $250,000, though.

I hope we will soon come to an era when everybody is flying around on jet packs that are not so expensive. Maybe the skies will be filled with jet packers, and I wonder how long it will take for us to cease to be impressed by it.

There were only 4 votes between second and third place, with the new essential kitchen appliance, Pizza Scissors, managing to grab the runner up spot.

Pizza lovers rejoice: serving slices is easier than ever! Slice and serve pizza easily with this new invention. It combines kitchen shears with a wedge-shaped spatula so you can slice and serve with one hand without ever losing toppings.

Finally in third place we have the very useful Stealth Switch.

This desktop cloaking device instantly hides applications of a dubious nature just at the press of a covert foot switch. Your offending browser/application isn’t just minimised but is completely hidden from view. Save your job and that eBay bid at the same time!

Thanks again to all entrants, voters and commentators. The next weekly coolest gadgets will be up for voting this Friday (write about gadgets and want to enter, here’s how), see you there.

Oh nearly forgot, this weeks randomly drawn voter who wins the Sansa Fuze MP3 Player is Jabberwock, congratulations we’ll be in touch to sort out shipping details.

eMusic reaches a new milestone, announces 4 million tracks now available

eMusic, as we have previously learned is the number two digital music provider in terms of catalog size, has once again reached another milestone. Their most recent announcement puts them at the 4 million mark, which is now made up of music from more than 40,000 record labels. Some most recent additions include music from Nine Inch Nails, Liz Phair and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

eMusic currently offers music in the MP3 format, of which are all DRM-free. Much of the collection are independent titles, which coincidentally also places eMusic as the number 1 independent music site. In addition to the music tracks, eMusic also offers a complete range of ebooks in a variety of genres.

Sonos gets official on ZP120 and ZP90, but no new controller

by Ryan Block, posted Aug 5th 2008 at 3:00AM
It’s been a while since Sonos last had a significant hardware announcement, so welcome into the world their new ZP120 ($500) and Z90 ($350), as well as the $1,000 BU150 bundle (which includes both the new devices and the same original controller). The main difference, which we’d already heard: they now both support SonosNet 2.0, which uses MIMO to double the wireless distance between nodes. Also clear to those paying close attention, the amp-enabled aluminum-clad flagship model (ZP120) has undergone an intense weight loss treatment, leaving it significantly smaller than its predecessor (but still capable of driving 55W of sound).

Sonos is also launching the 2.6 version of its desktop software, which indexes more music than before (65k tracks total) and, surprisingly enough, gives new AND existing users $200 in free music from sites like eMusic and Livedownloads. Of course, the one piece of Sonos gear we’ve been most longing to see updated — the $400 controller — has gone totally untouched, and won’t even be getting SonosNet 2.0. Maybe they’ll throw us a bone and hook us up with an iPod touch / iPhone controller app in the mean time, but we’re not holding our breath. Photos and unboxing / hands-on shots below.

Lenovo enters netbook market with IdeaPad S10

I guess Lenovo cannot help but look on in envy at Asustek and their success with the phenomenal Eee PC series which now comes in a whole slew of variants and sizes unlike the original 7″ version. The China-based company decided to take matters into their own hands by releasing a new netbook known as the IdeaPad S10. This extremely slim and small netbook will target customers who are looking for a first-time notebook purchase that won’t burden your shoulders nor your wallet, and it makes for the perfect companion for people who already have a primary desktop to work with. The IdeaPad is not a processing powerhouse, so don’t expect it crunch numbers for a scientific experiment anytime soon. What you can do with it, however, is what most other people do in the world - check your email, update your blog, read Coolest Gadgets, and other basic computing tasks. More on the IdeaPad S10 right after the jump.

The 10.2-inch screen IdeaPad S10 netbook comes in flavors of classic white and bold black as well as a glossy ruby red. For a comfortable, more natural computing experience, Lenovo designed the keyboard to be 85 percent of the size of a full-function notebook PC’s keyboard, and an energy-efficient LED backlit display helps provide longer battery life than traditional displays. For easy connection to the Internet, the IdeaPad S10 netbook includes WiFi and also has an Express Card slot so users can enable the IdeaPad S10 for optional high speed mobile broadband2 connectivity. To optimize the social networking experience, the IdeaPad S10 comes with tools such as a built-in web camera for video messaging, and its two USB ports and a 4-in-1 multicard reader make connecting other devices and transferring photos, music and videos simple. The IdeaPad S10 netbook comes equipped with Microsoft Windows XP.

The Intel Atom-powered IdeaPad S10 will come in a couple of configurations for you to choose from - 512MB with an 80GB hard drive and another model with double the respective amounts. Prices will start from $399 upwards as the IdeaPad S10 hits retail stores early this October.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad T, SL, W, R, and X-series are popping for retail

by Thomas Ricker, posted Aug 5th 2008 at 2:06AM
Sitting up nice and pretty on Lenovo’s US store front are none other than Lenovo’s newest lineup of ThinkPad notebooks. The site breaks down if you try to custom configure and order anything at the moment but it’s good to see the 12.1-inch X200, 12.1-inch X-series tablet, SL, R, T, and W-series of laptops readying themselves for take-out.

[Thanks, Salman and Spencer]
